Hills Feline Neutered Cat Diet

Posted: Friday 20th February, 2009

After neutering, a cat's metabolism changes; it slows down making them more prone to weight gain. But steps can be taken to reduce the risk from this happening:

  • Firstly by reducing the amount of food you give your cat; by reducing the amount of your cat's normal diet to allow for the change in metabolism you can help prevent weight gain.
  • If your cat still gains weight then placing your cat onto a light diet is advisable.
  • The most important thing though is to regularly monitor your cat's weight; the practice offers free nurse weight checks to weigh your pet and discuss diet so that any weight gain is caught early before it becomes a real problem.

Hills Neutered Cat is a diet specially designed for the changes that occur after neutering and its design means your cat can be placed onto the diet straight after neutering at 6 months of age; rather than having to wait until they are a year old to place them onto an adult light diet.

Leaving your cat to gain weight can cause serious health problems including:

  • Heart disease
  • Fat accumilation in the liver leading to hepatic lipidosis which can be fatal.
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hip dysplasia and arthritis
  • Urinary problems and bladder stones which can lead to a blocked bladder; an extremely painful emergency condition which again if left untreated can be fatal.

Even though neutering can lead to obesity the benefits of neutering far outweigh the cons! Neutering:

  • Reduces the risk of some forms of cancer
  • Reduces aggressive behaviour in males
  • Increases affection and loyalty to home and owner
  • Reduces straying and therefore help avoid road accidents
  • In female cats it helps prevent cystic ovaries, uterus infections, breast tumors and hormone problems
  • If done early enough can stop male cats spraying in the house.
  • And most importantly in females stops the risk of unwanted litters! Female cats are usually sexually mature at around 6 months of age and so can become pregnant. Cats can also have recurrent litters and female cats may come back into heat from 7 days to a few weeks after giving birth!

The practice advises generally on spaying cats at around 5 1/2 to 6 months of age. Although if kept with entire male cats we may advise spaying slightly early. Ask your vet for advice based on your circumstances.

So what does Hills Neutered Cat do?

    Keeping your cat fit

The change in hormonal balance after neutering will slow down your cat's metabolism, making him or her more prone to weight gain. But there's no reason why your cat should put on weight. You just need to take care that you feed the correct food in the right amounts. Hill's NeuteredCat is formulated using our unique Weight Management Formula (WMF). It contains just the right amount of fats and calories to keep your cat fit and trim after neutering.

    Keeping your cat healthy

Urinary problems are common in all cats, and slightly more so after neutering. This is nothing to worry about as feeding a food with the correct balance of minerals will help your cat avoid these problems. Hill's NeuteredCat is formulated with controlled mineral levels to maintain urinary health. Cats become more prone to kidney problems in later life, therefore Hill's NeuteredCat also contains high levels of antioxidant vitamins E & C to help protect the kidneys, and because it contains no excess salt, there's no unnecessary risk of damage.

    Food for life

Hill's NeuteredCat is a complete, balanced food for your cat. And like all Science Plan products, it's high quality and free from artificial preservatives, flavouring, colouring or unnecessary fillers. To get the maximum benefit you should feed it every day and not mix it with any other food.

Plus all the great benefits of feeding Hill's Science Plan

    • Healthy immune system
    • Strong bones and muscle
    • Healthy skin and radiant coat
    • Supports urinary health
    • Optimal agility
    • Clean teeth and fresh breath

Hills are so confident in neutered cat that they will give a money back guarantee to all customers who are not satisfied with the product. And it is only avaliable in practice!

As will all dietary changes the practice recommends slowly introducing the new diet over a period of 7-10 days; slowly increasing the new food and decreasing the old food until your cat is completely on the new diet.

For any queries or to find out more ask your vet or a nurse in the practice.
